I believe he was planning on adding capitalization to his venture company, much as MSD has been doing. But when he saw what was happening at CPQ he decided to hold off. Unlike the departing management, Rosen has a great reputation for high integrity and may have wanted to avoid even the appearance of a "funny" sale. At least that is the story from someone who talked with him over the holidays.

For some reason this overwrote a response to your previous post instead of the post I was responding to, which was

DELL's server business plan is not on track. They stalled mid last year. They have taken steps to address the problem which if well executed will get them back on track later this year, and of course I have great faith in DELL execution, but it is a very difficult challenge, with lots of internal issues to address for DELL, nowhere near as simple and straightforward as the desktop play. Here it is not so much competitive forces as the need to build the business without disrupting DELL's core business principles which makes it hard to do.

another one drops. IBM's concession s/b next. HP to follow. CPQ probably worth buying now that clueless 5fer and the spinmason are gone. The co. can probably start by selling Tandem and DEC, and maybe focusing on what made them great years ago ... PCs? Or is it too late? Other option, stick to PCs in retail stores and suck up to DELL for servicing business to make something out of disastrous DEC purchase.

"DELL now absolutely IMHO owns the business of purveying PC's worldwide-DELL is presently in the process of destroying CPQ's "last best hope -the server business."

I couldn't agree with you more!
I'm amazed that Pfeiffer lasted so long.
Hopefully "the street" wakes up and now sees CPQ for the dog that it is and will be!
