You're right, LK, and I'm not really gloating. One thing the market has demonstrated over the past several years is that it is confused about the computer business in general and doesn't understand Sun in particular; so there's no telling what effect this will have in the short term.

And in the long term, IMHO Compaq does indeed have the raw materials in place to pose a threat to Sun--they just gave themselves more credit for execution ability then they deserved. Can somebody new come in and turn it around, pull all these shards together into a coherent money-making whole? One never knows. Look at Apple: a corpse halfway through a long walk off a short pier at the end of 96. But Jobs came in, disinfected away the...things running the company, adjusted the strategy to the universe we're actually in, and almost tripled the stock in a year. So anything is possible. Compaq's in much better overall shape than Apple was at their low point, but they've got more crazy balls to juggle.
