Maybe men and women are different species. The species I belong to spends, for each child, nine months pregnant, two years nursing, and another ten or twenty years rearing said child toward self-sufficient adulthood. It strikes me that any man who stands to benefit if his children live long enough to reproduce has a decided genetic advantage if he sticks around and lends me a hand. That hand need not be monogamy, it might be the occasional piece of meat and collectively fighting off predators, or something more elaborate, but the prolonged and decided helplessness of human children is very different than that of other species. Most likely because of the relative disparity between the size of the human head and the human pelvis, babies can't be born later than nine months or they won't come out of the pelvis.

As father of the Helenator, how long do you think Spouse and Helenator would survive alone on the African veldt?
