what i mentioned isn't something that costs money. perhaps i didn't explain it well.

i just checked the windows defrag utility (instead of my norton's) and i see that under advanced options, you can select 'check drive for errors'. if, for instance, this is selected, that is the equivalent of running a disk scan (i believe) and may add huge chunks of time to the defrag process. also check under advanced properties to see if you are defragging files, or free space, or both together.

for clarification, i wasn't suggesting that you use norton's utilities.
