Sunday April 18, 9:59 pm Eastern Time Ballard to demonstrate fuel cell vehicle in Calif. WASHINGTON, April 18 (Reuters) - Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLD.TO - news) said on Sunday it would hold the first street demonstration of the fuel cell-powered vehicle it has developed with DaimlerChrysler (DCX - news) in California on Tuesday. Spokeswoman Debby Roman said the demonstration would take place in Sacramento. The vehicle, based on the Mercedes A-Class compact, uses a fuel cell to drive an electric motor. The cell turns hydrogen gas into electricity and leaves only water vapor in its exhaust. Roman said Ballard and its partners in the venture, including Ford Motor Co (F - news), hoped the technology would revolutionize the auto industry. The prototype car was unveiled on March 17, causing a sharp jump in Ballard's stock.
