The definition of "meme" that I encountered, and I do not vouch for its correctness, was more interesting. A meme was a thought or thought construct with certain biological properties. It propagated itself. It fed on the basic thought-stuff: imagination, attention. It mutated; the mutants competed.
Religions are the king daddy memes of the human thought ecology. Jokes are memelets of the most trivial sort, unless you are a big fan of Monty Python.

It's just a fancy way of talking about things. My memory is so bad, I am trying to remember there was a way of talking about symbols a while back, a really fancy word, that made it sound really impressive. Semiotics. That's it.
