Re:>>> Imation SuperDisk Problems <<<

Macworld Labs checks out three reported glitches with Imation's USB floppy drive

Three issues have cropped up since the release of the USB version of Imation's SuperDisk -- an external drive that reads high-density floppies and Imation's own 120MB disks:

1. Multiple-floppy software installs

During the installation procedure, after the Mac is ready to eject the first floppy and go on to floppy number two, the Imation drive doesn't eject the first disk. Strangely enough, if you get to the second floppy in an installation, and then the installer wants to go back to the first floppy, the Imation has no problem ejecting.

Imation's Jason Thunstrom says that the installer software has its own drivers that prompt the system, and these drivers aren't looking for an Imation drive. He says that the companies that make installers are updating them to work with the Imation drive. We pointed out that this doesn't help people with legacy software they don't want to upgrade. He said they recommend copying the floppies onto a hard drive and installing that way.

We were able to eject the disk by unplugging the drive's power, re-plugging and then quickly hitting the eject button -- though we're obviously not delighted with this solution. We had less luck with just unplugging the USB connection.

2. Software with floppy-based copyright protection keys

Currently, if you own software that requires that you insert their copyright key floppy disk to run the software, you are unable to run that software with the SuperDisk. They are working on the next version of the driver, which will fix this problem, but they weren't able to commit to a timeline.

3. Incompatibility with another Mac's floppies.

Imation hadn't heard of this problem, and in our limited testing we haven't confirmed it either. Our guess is that the head on an older Mac's floppy drive is off center. This happens...

We'll keep an eye on these problems and test Imation's SuperDisk drive again when they relase their next driver. Check back with us for a follow-up report at that time.
