>>I have sat here for several minutes trying to find the words to explain why we Canadians are so in love with this game, but in the end, I could not dredge them up.<<

i know, you canucks can't hit a consistent jumper from 18 feet out ;-)

earlie, i hear ya. i'm not a hockey fan, but i respect wayne for his fire. the same kind of fire that michael jordan, larry bird and magic johnson possessed (pssst, guess what sport i enjoy... ;-)

i loved magic (so unselfish, very productive and still stylish), grew to acknowledge mj as the best ever (by a lot, not a little) and hated larry bird (but respect his intensity - he was great). then again, i was a laker fan for some context.

that fire, that passion is a thing of wonder, be it in an athletic event or anywhere else.

folks like mj and wayne won games before they even played them.

it is amazing and i miss that kind of magic in the nba. i suspect you will miss wayne's magic in the nhl.

times do change...

Earlie, great post. I reveled myself to find words to describe the joy it has been to see the "99" carve & place that no look pass on the tape with ease for so many years. It's hard to put into words what Wayne has done for so many.

Yesterday I took my boy to get roller blades in honor or the Great One. For the whole season we have watched every Rangers game possible as I tried to explain what Wayne means to the game. At one point today my boy said "but dad, Satan has 39 goals..and that's pretty good? Right"... I said "yes buddy...but Wayne could score that in a week." He didn't get it right away...but then I told him Wayne's scored 92 before. After the game today he said "I bet Yager feels bad that Wayne didn't score?"..."you got it son...you got it..."

Earlie,

A very fine post. I think you are indeed Wayne's teammate tonight. Your post, and what you do everyday, bring the same qualities that Wayne brought to the game of hockey: a superior intellect and tremendous heart.

Earlie, Wayne who? <VBG> Seriously, a superb player, though I have trouble when a player in any one generation is named the best ever. You just don't know unless they play against each other at their primes.

Anyway, lots of legends out of their sports recently: Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Daryl Strawberry. <g>
