*CineComm* From Loral stream: Re: Digital Cinema . . . .... is a coming revolution in the distribution and exhibition of motion pictures. The leading company in the field is CineComm, which is a joint venture of Qualcomm and Hughes-JVC. The system was developed by Qualcomm to distribute movies to theaters in an encrypted form by satellite, and store it locally. Hughes-JVC will provide the digital video projectors, which are supposedly capable of equaling the quality of a virgin film print. The CEO of CineComm is Michael Targoff, former executive of Loral. Texas Instruments DLP Division is also going into this business as a competitor. Digital movie distribution should give Loral's Cyberstar a nice new source of revenues in the years ahead. The first public demonstration of the CineComm system will come in June when a small number of theatres will show George Lucas' new Star Wars Episode 1 -The Phantom Menace, which is expected to be a huge hit. For anyone who is really interested in this area, I would highly recommend going to the following page on CineComm's website, and downloading the 17 page report "Making Digital Cinema Happen -What It Takes and Who's Going To Do It". This report is in PDF (Adobe Acrobat)format.cinedc.com Loral url: Message 8994759 Quarterly results tomorrow! Yay! Rah, Rah, Rah MightyQ! Mqurice PS: Oil is getting mighty expensive. Arab Light bottomed out at $8 per barrel in December and now $13. Ouch! Prepare for a swoon in the USA stock market in May. That will trim oil demand a bit and test the resolve of the OPEC club who haven't heard of NPV [net present value] for their crude oil. Heck, they don't even charge interest because it's against the Koran [But I bet they demand payment in some form!]. A lot of production will have closed during the cheap prices and it won't come back into production at current prices, so maybe they'll hold the line. Qualcomm, being a leader of The New Paradigm, will not have their business affected but will no doubt see a ding in the stock price if there is a swoon. Same as when Korea was supposed to end it all for Q! there was an improvement in CDMA business as Koreans stayed home and went to work.
