<<I am amazed at the many criticisms of the discount brokerages and on line servics. Why not use a full service broker.>>

I have...who says they are any better? I've had many bad experiences with both. ;)

The criticisms are well founded. Discount brokerages were put on the planet to provide a service. The service was supposed to be efficient, it is not, the service was to be reliable, it is not, the service was to be improved, it is not!

I started to manage my own acct, when I realized I could be as "equally incompetent" and not have to pay the huge commision. After 6 years, i now manage a large portfolio far more successfully than one of the better brokers. I am tired of having a broker, who drives his little BMW back and forth to work, sit across from me and when asked what he recommends, reach over to his computer and punch in the code for "analyst recommendations"!!

There are very few "thinking brokers" in Canada, this has been accelerated by the Bre-X fiasco. They now are NOT ALLOWED to recommend anything the analyst does not!! This suits the majority of them because they never had a clear thought in their life anyway, but some.....who truly "think" for a living are finding independance something they crave for!

Save the discount brokerages for buying TRP or BCE or stocks you might be building a position in over time, though I suppose daytraders don't do that.

I and all the others on this thread, have longterm accts and invest just as maturily as anyone else. However the speculative portion of our portfolio is managed by us daily, not looking for the next Bre-X but looking for the next $1.00 or .50c!! I would much rather make a dollar in a day than wait 3 months for a mining stock to move...as much!

I find discount brokers fill a lot more quickly than a full service ones for less money, but they still leave something to be desired.
