QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies' Fifth-Generation CDMA Chipset Powers Japan's CDMA Launch

PR Newswire, Monday, April 19, 1999 at 07:47

- Industry Leader Supports Japan's cdmaOne Nationwide Network Launch -

SAN DIEGO, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM),
pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital
wireless technology, today announced that its fifth-generation MSM3000(TM)
Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipsets are featured in the handsets developed
by three Japanese manufacturers, for the country's first nationwide
cdmaOne(TM) network, which was jointly launched by DDI CORPORATION and
IDO CORPORATION on April 14, 1999.
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies, the industry's largest provider of CDMA
technology chipsets and system software, announced earlier this year volume
shipments of the MSM3000 chipset and system software to Japanese, Korean and
U.S. CDMA handset manufacturers.
Three Japanese manufacturers -- TOSHIBA CORPORATION, SANYO Electric Co.,
Ltd., and Hitachi, Ltd. -- became the country's first manufacturers utilizing
QUALCOMM's MSM3000 chipset and system software solution to receive
confirmation that their phones are fully compliant with the Japanese
operators' requirements.
"We are very proud of being the first company to have shipped a cdmaOne
phone that is fully compliant with the Japanese nationwide network
requirement," said Mr. Takao Kishida, general manager of Mobile Communications
Division at TOSHIBA. "Our collaboration with QUALCOMM made this happen."
"We are very satisfied with QUALCOMM's MSM3000 which allows us to provide
our customers with the superior performance they require in terms of enhanced
connection rate, call clarify and power efficiency," said Mr. Eiji Kotobuki,
general manager of Personal Telecommunication Division at SANYO.
"Thanks to QUALCOMM's total data-voice solution capability, we have full
confidence in being able to satisfy the users of our handsets now and in the
future, with the superb capability of cdmaOne technologies," said Mr. Osamu
Numata, general manager of Digital Media Products Division at Hitachi.
"The use of the MSM3000 solution by Japan's leading handset manufacturers
confirms our commitment to being the wireless industry's leading semiconductor
and software developer and provider," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM
CDMA Technologies. "As CDMA networks are built out in Japan, we look forward
to providing the chipsets and system software that fulfill the stringent
operator requirements for standby time, talk time and power consumption. The
fast time-to-market for these handsets underscores our competitive key
advantage in terms of our proven roadmap for product evolution and on-time
delivery."
QUALCOMM's MSM3000 chipset solution, with an industry-leading
86.4 kilobits per second (kbps) data rate capability, fully meets Japanese
operator requirements for performance, as stipulated by DDI and IDO. TOSHIBA,
SANYO and Hitachi handsets, featuring the MSM3000 chip, all meet minimum
requirements for stand-by-time (150 hours) and talk-time (120 minutes).
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies is continuing to lead the wireless industry in
providing semiconductor/software system solutions that allow phone
manufacturers the ability to innovate and differentiate their CDMA handsets
while reducing development costs.
In February, the division announced the development of its MSM3100(TM),
sixth-generation MSM, featuring a 50 percent reduction in the printed circuit
board area and a 50 percent increase in stand-by time, to an estimated
300 hours in CDMA mode with a 650 mAh battery. The division also unveiled its
PureVoice VR(TM) voice recognition software that will allow manufacturers to
quickly add powerful speech capabilities to CDMA handsets, benefiting
consumers with easier hands-free use and access to complete voice dialing
telephone directories.
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies is the leading developer and supplier of CDMA
chipsets, hardware and software solutions and tools with more than 30 million
MSM chips shipped worldwide. The division supplies chipsets to the world's
leading CDMA handset and infrastructure manufacturers including: ALPS ELECTRIC
CO., LTD; CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD.; DENSO CORPORATION; FUJITSU LIMITED;
Hitachi, Ltd.; Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd.; KYOCERA CORPORATION;
LG Information and Communications, Ltd.; Samsung Electronics Ltd.; SANYO
Electric Co., Ltd.; and Toshiba Corporation, among others.

Anthony..

Even if Skip is in the ballpark with the number of subscriber devices you have to keep in mind that this number, ie 286mil devices, is cumulative. I doubt very much that there will be 286million devices sold in 2004 alone..Nonetheless Skip seems to be on to an interesting way of looking at what might happen...Dave
