FORE's Industry-Leading ATM, Application Aware Networks Provide Unmatched Support for Broadcast Technology Leaders at NAB'99

PITTSBURGH and LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- As digital television, data and communications converge on a single network infrastructure, the need for reliable and resilient high performance networking technology has never been greater. At the National Association of Broadcasters convention (NAB'99) in Las Vegas, industry technology leaders are demonstrating the power of convergence with the help of high performance network equipment from FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a leading global supplier of Application Aware(TM) networking solutions.

FORE Systems' networking solutions include its award-winning asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, which is a key network transport mechanism recommended by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). FORE's standards-based ATM solutions enable the high-speed transport of video, voice and data traffic with guaranteed quality of service and network resiliency, regardless of network traffic load.

The result is a robust and flexible foundation for mission-critical networks that can provide unparalleled support for companies in television production, post-production, distribution and telecommunications services.

Industry leaders in more than a dozen booths are using FORE's networking equipment at NAB'99 (April 19-22) to demonstrate advanced applications and services that will help revolutionize the broadcasting industry. Among those utilizing FORE equipment are: -- Tektronix (Booth #L22914) -- Tektronix and FORE Systems are demonstrating real time transport of uncompressed HDTV over an ATM network. This transport utilizes the OC-48c port of the ForeRunner(R) ASX(TM)-4000 ATM switch, the industry's only ATM port capable of transporting uncompressed HDTV today. Additional demonstrations (Booth #S7172, S424) include MPEG2 video conferencing and video trunking over ATM networks. -- Oracle (Booth #S2765) -- Oracle and FORE Systems are demonstrating highly scalable Interactive Digital Television over an ATM network. Oracle Video Server operating on an SGI Origin2000 utilizes multiple OC-3c fiber connections to the ATM switch. Over 100 Element14 settop boxes connected via 25 Mbps ATM over UTP copper connections play MPEG- 2 encoded television programs. -- EMC Corporation (booth #L12105) -- EMC and FORE Systems are demonstrating automated program playout of television programs over an ATM network. EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software, under automation control, deliver multiple ATSC-compliant program streams via the ATM network to multiple distributed decoders, creating new distribution opportunities for station groups and program networks. Other exhibitors supporting the EMC/FORE distributed automated DTV demonstration include: -- AF Associates (Booth #L10641) -- Harris Corporation, Broadcast Systems Division (Booth #L16710) -- Other NAB99 exhibitors demonstrating FORE ATM Networks -- -- Compaq Computer (Booth #S6938) -- InnovaCom (Booth #S9171) -- ECI Telecom (Booth #S4072) -- Leitch (Booth #L22257) -- Synctrix (Booth #S2144) -- V-Brick (Booth #S9074)
