SNIA Expands Scope, Adds Three New Board Positions, Two New Working Groups, Approves Two Permanent Director Positions

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--

Board Vows Organization Will "Move at the Speed of Industry," to

Lead the Open Storage Networking Revolution

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has formed two new programs to accelerate the development, evolution and acceptance of multi-vendor storage network standards. With the strong public endorsement and commitment of resources from 12 leading manufacturers of storage solutions, which was announced by an independent group of manufacturers on April 6, the SNIA Board of Directors also approved three new board positions and two new permanent director positions at its meeting on April 8.

"In the past year SNIA has grown to 98 member companies and individuals," said Dr. Paul Borrill, chairman of SNIA. "With broad industry support, including all major manufacturers, committed to using SNIA to develop new standards, and to implementing those standards in products, SNIA is now the acknowledged center for the open storage industry."

"With the support of our members behind us, we are focusing the SNIA to move at the speed of the industry," Borrill said. "As companies contribute expertise, funding, and equipment to support our efforts, we see a new era of cooperation that will accelerate our vision of building shareable multi-vendor storage area network (SAN) subsystems that reliably interoperate. With a strong, well supported standards body, manufacturers will be able to bring products to market faster and more efficiently, customers will have access to compatible products, and the entire industry will grow more rapidly: This is the ultimate win-win."

The Board voted to add several new working groups and a guiding council, each of which has a board-appointed interim chair until permanent chairs are elected by the groups. *T

development, with Brad Stamas, consulting analyst for the

corporate architecture group, Storage Technology Corporation, as

interim chair.

- Two new technical working groups: - Storage Network Component Architecture, with Howard Alt, technology officer, Network Storage, Sun Microsystems, as

interim chair.

- Storage Container Architecture, with Dr. Karl Schubert, director, Architecture & Advanced Technologies Storage

Division, Enterprise Systems Group, Dell Corporation, as

interim chair.

- A team to establish a Multi-vendor Compatibility Testing & Certification Lab, with Roger Reich, manager of network storage

strategy, Compaq Computer Corp., as interim chair.

The Board also approved several new board and director positions.

- Four new Board-of-Director Members, to fill three new at-large

board positions, and one open position: - Howard Alt, Sun Microsystems.

- Dennis Talluto, chairman, Fibre Channel Association.

- The open board position was created when Bob Brown, formerly

responsibilities as president and COO of Contigo Software.

Brown will continue to lead the association's marketing

efforts, including the associations Spring Conference

scheduled for next month in San Diego.

- A permanent Marketing Director, Dr. Mary Ann Peters, managing

director of McGillicuddy & Peters.

- A permanent Technical Director position to drive standards

development activities, with a search committee chaired by Clod

Barrera, director of storage systems, IBM Corporation.
