I wonder if a correlation would show up if you offset the graphs in time. That is, there may be no correlation between today's crude price and today's sector stock price. But there might be a correlation between today's crude price and the stock prices 3 months from now (or one month or one year). This, if true, would be even more usefull, giving a leading indicator. Also, you might use first derivatives (change in prices, rather than the price itself), and see if a pattern appears. Just thinking out loud.
