I think the reason they quit is possibly more complex than appears on
the surface. They were getting flack from the Board of Directors for
mismanagement as if it were only a micro issue within CPQ. There are
problems within CPQ such as still digesting DEC. I think PC companies
do have to diversify to survive but DEC and Tandem were not the
way. Diversify into the Internet space and E@Commerce. So that to
me was one of their problems. But I do think the CEO was partly
correct that there is a shift in the PC business. Those who will pay
up for robust PC configurations have their PC already. The market is
in the low margin sub-1000 PC space and there are a ton of Internet
firms marketing off-brand units. So there is some degradation to this
business model. When the Board gave them limited support on these
issues they may have walked partly in protest. Just a different
view from what we have read but only a guess on my part.
