You are exactly right - first to a standard IRA then to a Roth. I rolled over $20,000 last year - I am at least 25 years from retirement and based on a bunch of factors (current and future income, etc), it was the right decision.

If you are (or expect to be) in a high income bracket at retirement it doesn't really make sense to hold stock in a traditional IRA as the tax rate of 36% is significantly greater than the 20% capital gains you would pay when selling from (dividends aside) a standard brokerage account.
