This will allow broadcasters to count on Sony as a single point of contact for pre- and post-sales support, as well as systems integration services.
Under the agreement, GI's DigiCipher(R) II ATSC-compliant high definition (HD) encoders and related digital transmission equipment will be added to Sony's full suite of HD production equipment, which includes HDW-700 HDCAM(R) camcorders, HDC-700 studio cameras, HDC-750 portable field cameras, HDM series high definition monitors, HDS-7000 digital switcher, HDME-7000 multi-effects unit, HDW-500 HDCAM VTRs and the PFV-HD/HKPF series of HDTV conversion and distribution products.
The Sony Broadcast and Professional Company will market, sell, support and install the DigiCipher II encoders as part of this integrated solution, as well as market the DigiCipher II system as a stand-alone MPEG -2 compression encoding system.
GI and Sony worked together on the HD transmission of four NFL football games for CBS this past season. Having full project responsibility, Sony operated the GI HD encoders as part of National Mobile Television's Sony- equipped digital high definition live production mobile trucks, HD-1 and HD-2.
"We are very pleased to enter this agreement with GI, said Anthony Gargano, Senior Vice President of Communication Systems for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "With the addition of GI's encoders and digital transmission equipment, Sony is now offering an overall HDTV broadcast solution, which is the future of television programming. DigiCipher II technology is developed by General Instrument's San Diego- based SBNS business unit, which provides digital television systems sending compressed video service to television network affiliates, cable television headends, corporate locations, or consumer homes. The technology compresses and multiplexes both SDTV (standard definition NTSC television) and HDTV signals within a single integrated transmission system. It is compatible with MPEG -2 standards for transport and video syntax.
