Lewis Levin's comments about the software platform from an interview last November:

Q: Is the technical challenge more in the software or the hardware?

Levin: Mostly software. Our bill-presentment system is really going to be a showcase of Microsoft technology. It's going to be rack-mounted, Intel-based PC servers on the Microsoft platform-NT, SQL, IIS. The price performance is good, but there's a big difference between running a system that's on one giant Tandem versus one that's on 200 Compaqs. It's relatively easy to administer the one Tandem. It becomes a real challenge to administer the 200 Compaqs. We worked on segmenting our database. We have to keep six months of bills for millions of consumers in what looks logically like one database. The only way we could do that was to know that we could actually partition it across multiple servers. So we're pushing the envelope a little bit on that.
