Mary,

What did you think of EP's personality, veracity, techical knowledge, and his ability to manage Compaq's transition from a low tech box maker into a diversified hitech industry leader?

The first time I saw EP was at a company wide meeting where he was pointing at a map of Europe and speaking with a thick German accent. It was a little disconcerting ;^)

At the time (Halloween, 1991) Compaq was hurting due to price pressure from Dell. EP was brought in to change the company from an engineering company to a low cost volume box producer (like Dell.) The effort was so successful that Compaq obtained enough cash to buy DEC and Tandem.

He is not a technical person, but I believe he has correctly identified the need to differentiate Compaq's product from their competitors. His style is very direct. I left the company after he sent out a memo asking how many engineers wanted to switch over to phone support. I never saw any reason to question his veracity about anything of importance.

I don't see his leaving the company as being a good thing at this point.
