I don't care much about these auction sites, fwiw.

I agree with you on that. It's a matter of trust. I don't have any reason to trust any of the folks that put items up for bid, so I avoid the places. If I were to use anything, I might try Amazon's since they have something of a guarantee in place and because they put their name behind the service.

I don't really like HyperMart in general because of the trust issue. I've wandered through a few random links on their pages, but some of the sites I saw there struck me as at least unprofessional and perhaps even sleazy. But at least, adding auctions increases the value of those sites for those who wish to use them. Because of that, it seems like a good strategic purchase for the company. I figure there's a chance they could even build something that overcomes the trust issue and that somehow unifies the disparate sites into something in which one could place one's trust.

Since GNET is dropping now to the 165 range, we may be seeing the negative reaction to this announcement. I suspect it will turn around before the day is out.

I wouldn't regard this as so much an addition to the portal as a way of expanding e-commerce services through Hypermart. This will be a small business to small business auction site more than anything, if they do this right. The relaunch of Hypermart in the next several weeks should give us a better idea of GNET's long-term strategy.
