James,
You said: Gustave, that was a nice story but I find it very hard to believe that we'll have Milosevic emulators appearing throughout Europe.
Unfortunately, it's not that hard to believe if you live over here...
I don't have much time to elaborate right now but let me tell you that the only danger looming over Europe for the time being is jingoism. As the communist/marxist utopy has miserably failed in Eastern Europe, there's no longer a common threat binding the diverse European countries together. That's partly why you have all these centrifugal forces going on throughout Europe: better-off regions (with higher GDP per capita) want to jettison the burden of helping the poorer ones... Bavaria wants to go on its own, same with Scotland, Catalonia, Lombardia, Flanders, Czech republic, Croatia, etc, etc... Then, you've got all these far-right leaders suddenly popping up everywhere: 15 years ago, chauvinistic parties would have gotten single-digit %-scores. Today, Austria's far-right FPO wins 42% of the votes in Southern Austria...
As the European proletariat and petty bourgeoisie realize that ''Globalization'' has left them in the dust, they might be tempted by some sort of protectionist society --''Our people first'' is the motto of the local Fleming jingoists. Another way to grasp such a political development is to think of medieval corporatism, that is a rentier economy that rewards people based on ethnicity, family ties, and other parochial criteria, instead of a ''pure'' market-driven, meritocratic social fabric...

Regards from Brussels,

Gustave.
