Taiwan's Winbond, Israel's Zapex To Develop Video Chip

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Winbond Electronics Corp. (Q.WBE) has signed a deal with Zapex Research Ltd. to produce a low cost MPEG video encorder, the Taiwanese chip company said in a release on Monday.

It didn't disclose any financial details.

The W99200F chip can store up to an hour of high quality video and audio on a single CD and can be used for digital VCRs, recordable video CDs, PC video capture and editing and web cameras, according to the release.

Zapex Research, which is based in Israel, develops highly integrated video chips for DVDs, VCDs and HDTV.

Winbond's stock closed unchanged at NT$40.50 (US$1=NT$32.750) on Monday on volume of 89.3 million shares.
