Re: evaluating.... yes, much better choice of words.

Dell is always looking at Intel wannabees i.e. AMD, Cyrix etc.
but until they can prove consistency in yields and supply
the volumes necessary for Dell to hinge an entire platform
on, these alternate vendors will continue to stay on the edge
of Dell's radar screen.

Developing a system around a PentiumIII and BX chipset is
complicated but far more stable and less bug laden than merging
a K6 with an RCC/VIA/whomever chipset. Believe it or not,
developing a high end chipset is more complicated than
developing the next generation processor. Intel is light
years ahead of everyone else in enabling a smooth
"next generation" platform development cycle for it's customers.

Strategicly, alternate vendors are not a good fit. For Dell's
consumer line, Dimension, the motherboard is designed by Intel.
It's obvious who's processor and chipset these platforms are
designed around. For business systems, Dell develops their
own motherboards and in this market, AMD et al are not
considered kings of quality and compatibility. Few PM's
would bet their career on purchasing 1000's of non Intel
systems for a fractional savings.

Until AMD's marketing machine can alter perception and/or
they can deliver the goods, I wouldn't expect a shift
regardless of their pricing policy or how much better their
processor may perform.

Dell could however decide to internally design a non Intel
consumer platform, but, from Dell's perspective, the cost
savings are not worth the disruptions in development
and manufacturing.... yet.
