SUN and Realnetworks:

Sun and RealNetworks Announce Plans for Breakthrough Technology Uniting Traditional Broadcast and Web Distribution
New Transcode Technology & Delivery of RealSystem G2 on Sun(TM) Platform Will Enable Broadcast and Broadband Quality Through Dial-Up
LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- At NAB '99, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news), a leader in network computing products and services, and RealNetworks, the recognized leader in media delivery for the Internet, today announced a continuation of their strategic alliance under which the companies will co-develop the industry's first transcode capability for MPEG-2 files to RealAudio G2 and RealVideo G2. For the first time, broadcasters will be able to use existing traditional broadcast content for delivery over the Web. Key to this technology is Sun's recently-announced Sun StorEdge(TM) Media Central software, an open, plug-able software platform for digital media management and audio/video distribution.

The continued alliance targets broadcast, cable, entertainment, and satellite communication companies and content providers who deliver audio and video content over the Web.

''Our goal is to help our digital media customers move to the network age,'' said Janpieter Scheerder, president, Network Storage, Sun Microsystems, Inc. ''These jointly-developed technologies will enable customers to leverage their existing digital assets in a variety of formats and improve overall digital media management and operational efficiency.''

Building the First Bridge Between Broadcast and the Web

Currently, broadcasters have no way to access and repurpose files that exist in disparate MPEG-2 and RealNetworks formats. The planned transcode technology will allow broadcasters to take existing high-resolution audio and video content used in their traditional play-to-air environment, and seamlessly stream it over the Web in multiple bit rates.

Empowering Customers with RealSystem(TM)G2 on Sun

Using their respective expertise in the digital media space, Sun and RealNetworks will work to provide customers with a powerful, scalable, and reliable Web streaming media solution.

''Sun is an ideal platform to deliver the speed and reliability necessary for the demanding professional and Web broadcast environments,'' said Mark Bretl, vice president, Media System, RealNetworks, Inc. ''RealSystem G2 on Sun will provide a tightly integrated, optimized streaming media solution with the ability to support high volumes of users.''

Sun StorEdge Media Central software takes advantage of Sun's highly scalable, network-enabled line of Sun Enterprise servers and high-performance Sun StoreEdge solutions. Combined with tools designed by third parties, Sun StorEdge Media Central delivers a broad set of flexible, customizable content management and audio/video distribution solutions.

Pinnacle Systems Announces DVD1000 - A Combination Video Editing and DVD Authoring Solution
DVD1000 Captures Digital Video and Creates DVDs
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--Pinnacle Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:PCLE - news) today announced DVD1000, one of the first products to feature video editing as well as DVD authoring in a single solution. DVD1000 features Pinnacle Systems recently announced DC1000, a complete dual-stream MPEG-2 video editing solution featuring technology from C-Cube Microsystems (NASDAQ:CUBE - news) as well as DVD authoring software from Minerva Systems Inc.

DVD1000 is a complete DVD creation system for corporate, event, and professional digital video artists who are looking for an affordable DVD authoring system to create corporate product demonstrations, training, entertainment, or educational DVDs.

''We are very excited to be part of Pinnacle Systems' move into the DVD authoring space. Minerva's Impression DVD authoring software works with the DVD1000 system to create DVD projects which can be burned onto a DVD-R disc or recorder on a DLT tape for DVD mastering. The resulting DVD can be played back on a PC equipped with a DVD player or a set-top DVD player,'' said Mauro Bonomi, CEO of Minerva Systems, Inc.

With the DVD1000 system, customers can capture digital video and audio via a DV/1394 connection, edit digital audio/video and then author for DVD or video tape utilizing the feature rich tools combined together in a single solution to create even better productions. DVD1000 comes bundled with Adobe's Premiere RT software for real time video and audio editing and Minerva's Impression DVD authoring software.

''We are extremely pleased about offering our first combination video editing and DVD authoring solution,'' said Ajay Chopra, VP of the desktop group at Pinnacle Systems. ''DVD1000 offers customers unmatched performance, dramatically increasing productivity at a phenomenal price/performance ratio. This extension of the video editing process to DVD authoring is a natural evolution of our vision to make media authoring tools easier and more productive. DVD1000 allows anyone with video editing expertise to become a DVD and a multimedia producer with one complete system,'' Chopra added.

''C-Cube's DVxpress-MX(TM) video production codec offers realtime, frame accurate control of MPEG-2 as well as compression flexibility for interoperability with all recordable DVD formats, an optimum solution for Pinnacle System's MPEG-2 editing and DVD authoring bundle,'' said Bob Saffari, director of marketing for broadcast and professional products for C-Cube's PC Codec Division. ''With this new product, Pinnacle Systems has an opportunity to simplify the creation to distribution process.''

About DVD1000

DVD1000 is a combination digital video editing and DVD authoring solution, capable of real time processing of titles and transitions, providing more than 300 real time effects. DVD1000 provides hardware performance with an unparalleled software bundle including Adobe® Premiere® RT 5.1, Pinnacle Systems' TitleDeko titling software, Pixelan Video SpiceRack software effects and Sonic Foundry's ACID Music® software. Also included is Minerva's Impression DVD authoring software for professional authoring of DVDs with interactive menus, graphics and titles. The Impression DVD software can master to a DVD-R device or a DLT tape for duplication of the DVD. The resulting DVD can be played back on any personal computer equipped with a DVD player or any set top DVD player. DVD1000 can use analog or DV video and output the finished production to videotape, CD or DVD.

DVD1000 is based on Pinnacle Systems' DC1000 technology that takes advantage of storage efficient IPPP encoding of MPEG-2 video. Its unique design allows the user to edit MPEG-2 videos frame-by-frame even within compressed groups of pictures. DC1000 includes all the features of the DVD1000 except DVD authoring. DC1000 can author to either videotape of CD-R. DVD1000 can author to videotape, CD-R and DVD-R or DLT. Both DC1000 and DVD1000 include real time processing hardware that enables your final video production to be played with real-time effects - all on one editing system. The DC1000/DVD1000's MPEG-2 encoding system is based on the 4:2:2P@ML standard specifically designed for video editing. This provides frame-accurate editing based on Group of Pictures (''GOPs''), called ''Smart-GOPs''. Video is captured as industry-standard AVI files, stored as IPPP GOP format data, alongside PCM format audio. Although compatible with I-frame only MPEG-2 systems, DVD1000 and DC1000's more efficient IPPP format provides the same quality with much lower storage requirements.

The DVD1000 will be available in Summer '99 at an introductory retail price of $8,995 and is compatible with Windows NT based PCs. Pinnacle Systems also offers a DV (IEEE 1394) I/O module as an upgrade for the DVD1000 and DC1000. DC1000 customers can also upgrade to the features of the DVD1000.

Broadcasters must go digital -- Sony exec

LAS VEGAS -- In the opening keynote at the National Association of Broadcasters here, Sony Corp. of America chairman and CEO Howard Stringer told TV network execs to head for the digital future -- or else. "If you don't embrace (digital TV), Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and a couple of 20 year olds that you have never heard of will -- and they will talk down to you," he said. Sony, a provider of digital TV equipment, stands to gain a enormous amount from the changeover from analog to digital. -- Robert Lemos, ZDNN
