Expanding their years-long business relationship, General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. announced today a five-year collaboration to develop electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. Meanwhile Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG are cooperating to introduce a pilot fleet of fuel cell vehicles in California. Ford and Daimler are working on the venture with fuel-cell developer Ballard Power Systems of Vancouver. Earlier this year the automakers separately unveiled concept cars powered by fuel cells that could be on the market by 2004. Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. also are working with Ballard. GM and Toyota, which currently build vehicles together at joint- venture plants in Ontario and California, have identified more than a dozen advanced vehicle and system projects that could involve hundreds of research engineers working together. The GM-Toyota agreement calls for developing a common set of electric traction and control components for future battery electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. They'll also work together on batteries, safety issues, inductive charging systems, powertrains, control systems and systems designs. _- Copyright 1999 by United Press International. i hope, i still have the option.
