FIBERNET: Fibernet deploys UK's most advanced public ATM network

Fibernet, the high speed data networking specialist, has announced the deployment of nine additional core switches across its national TANet ATM network. A total of fifteen core switches are now in place, together with numerous access switches covering 43 major points of presence (PoPs).

The additional ATM switches also provide greater resilience to the network, providing auto-reconfiguration, should a switch or circuit fail. The Fore Systems switches, favoured by Fibernet, are unique in incorporating Smart Private Virtual Circuit (SPVC) technology which automatically re-routes traffic should there be a network failure. These features, coupled with Fore 's Private Virtual Path (PVP) functionality, which protects each customer's bandwidth from compromise by other users, make TANet the UK's most secure and advanced ATM network for customer traffic. For additional resilience, customers can be connected to two separate access points (dual homed) for each of their locations.

Core ATM switches have been positioned along the TANet network at crucial PoPs in Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, London, Croydon, Manchester, Reading and Northampton. The addition of these switches at key PoPs is part of Fibernet's strategy to place core switches as close to customer access points as possible in order to reduce customer costs for access to the ATM network. ATM services are also accessible from all of the 43 PoPs on the TANet network by utilising the ubiquitous SDH network to 'backhaul' traffic to the nearest ATM enabled PoP.

"Increasing the number of core ATM switches on the TANet network facilitates the provision of the most advanced, secure and cost effective network to our customers," said Charles McGregor, Chief Executive of Fibernet. "Ultimately the customer benefits from having a diverse spread of ATM switch locations across the network. We are continually upgrading the network and introducing new technology as it is needed, in order to ensure that Fibernet customers enjoy the most technically advanced network in the UK with the most flexible and innovative services."

Increasing the number of ATM switches will also create a greater diversity of routes for voice and data, ensuring that customer traffic is sent along the most cost effective and efficient path. The additional switches also facilitate advanced management technologies, like load balancing, providing end to end guaranteed Quality of Service (QOS) as well as supporting Fibernet's innovative bandwidth on demand and pay on use services.

Fibernet is dedicated to the design, supply, installation, management and maintenance of high-speed data networks across both the local and wide areas. For the local area its products include LAN hubs, optical fibre multiplexers, switches, routers and other intelligent connectivity products for complex high speed networks for organisations that face demanding requirements in data, voice and video. In addition, TANet Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of Fibernet group plc) is a Licensed Telecommunications Operator with a suite of high speed networking products and services that provide the ability to link remote premises at speeds of up to 622 Mbps and beyond. The company has its headquarters at Calleva Park, Aldermaston, Berkshire and has offices in London, Leeds, Glasgow and Dublin.
