NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Wanton liquidation of technology issues threw
cold water on a potent morning rally Monday, leaving U.S. stock
averages in tatters by the closing bell.

Internet-related issues were gored, with the Goldman Sachs Internet
Index stunned for a 17.4 percent loss -- its worst ever.

The Nasdaq Composite was scarred for a 138.43-point setback, or 5.6
percent, to 2,345.61. It was the second-biggest point loss in the
history of the technology-soaked index. In percentage terms, it was
the worst outing since Aug. 31.
