I don't follow the companies closely at all. After seeing Ballard pop up when the first news about fuel cells hits the streets, I gave up.

My hunch is that as soon as the technology looks promising, the big car companies will be the ones doing all the real technology development, and will be the ones profiting from it. If Ballard hopes to make a bunch of money on patents, that'll just encourage the car companies to do other parallel research to get around the patents. I don't think Ballard will make much money.

That doesn't mean that Ballard's stock won't go to the moon. When people get wind of the potential that fuel cell cars offer, they'll go nuts.

I thought the Prius (sp?) was a small internal combustion engine coupled to a generator, batteries, and electric motors to smooth out the running of the engine and to provide regenerative braking.
