Zen lives on in isolated pockets.
The sprinkler system failed in our house (fore and aft!) within a month of our moving in. So we shuffled off to Orchard and bought an oscillating sprinkler. We water our lawns.
And on a summer evening Spouse can be seen trailing a hose&wand about the yard, going from planting to planting like a big slow hummingbird.

I remember the water sprinklers that hooked on a hose. They are still around today.

My dad lived before civilization as we know it now. He sold his business and went in and worked for free.

My read of the times, the rabbit tomato story-

A friend got 2 dozen rabbits from the fair that were loosers. We killed and dressed them. I planted the offal in my garden. The next year I was given 6 tomato plants and planted them in that area. I had a tomato hedge. Took 2 grocery sacks full into my dad every other day. Finally I asked what they were doing with all the love apples. They were running them through the juicer for Bloody Mary mix for the neighborhood. Neighborhood, we don't have them any more.
