Lucent to build One.Tel GSM stage one

SYDNEY, April 19 (Reuters) - Telecommunications group
One.Tel Ltd said on Monday it has selected Lucent Technologies
Inc to build the first stage of its national GSM mobile phone
network.
It said the contract was worth A$240 million over five
years.
Lucent is the world's biggest telecommunications equipment
maker.
One.Tel, Australia's fourth largest telecomunications
carrier, said the GSM network would have enough capacity at the
end of five years for two million subscribers.
"One.Tel's GSM network will position the company as a major
player in the Australian digital mobile market," associate
director of technology Stephen Moore said in a statement.
It said it is negotiating agreements on inter-carrier
roaming, which would allow its customers to roam to another
network when outside One.Tel's coverage area, with other
carriers.
