Apple Media Software Challenges 2 Rivals.

By JOHN MARKOFF - New York Times

>Separately, at the National Association of Broadcasters meeting
in Las Vegas, Apple executives said today that its new server
software would have the support of several key hardware
manufacturers, including *Cisco Systems, I.B.M., Silicon Graphics
Inc. and Sun Microsystems*.

The result will be relatively inexpensive server computers that will
allow independent artists or small businesses to offer programming
to large audiences over the Internet.

Industry analysts said today that Apple should have a significant
advantage in the market for Internet multimedia software since
much of the multimedia material already offered on line was
originally created in the Quicktime format.<

IMO, SUNW adoption of QT, if true, is huge.

OTOH, how much choice did they have? Can you see them licensing a MSFT media player?

My guess for the next shoes to drop -- HWP -- followed by CPQ.

Hi, Richard.

Mark, Jesus, on one hand you go on about the iMac internet appliance, on the other your annoyed because of the lack of tech skills in the "realnetworks user base".

The best way to make money in the market is to be educated. Ask Peter Lynch if you don't believe me. I'd rather invest in a company that makes money off its products (Apple) than one that doesn't (RNWKS).

Just downloaded QT4 deluxe install. Title bar separates from the player. Tried BBC (One of 3 streaming sites listed on Apple site), the video was unviewable and there was no audio.

I just downloaded it too. I'm watching a BBC streaming link right now in another window as I type this. Audio and video are just fine, in fact better than I've ever seen from RealNetworks' products. YMMV. And, of course, I'm only using a 266Mhz iMac running 8.5.1. ;)

Good luck to you today. Could be a wild Super Tuesday!

Mark
