I agree with you, Blue. But jbe was offended by my saying that Washington was full of poor black people on drugs, and offered a contrary viewpoint. I think all of these things can be true at the same time, really. I have not been to the deep south, but it seems like all the historical prejudice and discrimination against blacks, and the general higher level of poverty for poor whites as well, have made the poverty worse, and harder to escape from. There is a little less of a class system in California, certainly, and if you somehow succeed at something, social class is fairly fluid.
