News on the UPS site from 4/14/99 on TRADE. UPS Chairman Appointed to President's Export Council WASHINGTON, April 14, 1999 -- UPS Chairman and CEO Jim Kelly today joined the President's Export Council (PEC), America's premier advisory committee supporting international trade. UPS, as the world's largest express distribution and logistics company, has long been recognized as a key facilitator of global trade. Kelly's induction makes him the only PEC member from the express courier industry and reflects the increasingly important role of supply chain management and air express delivery in today's just-in-time, schedule-driven global economy. "I firmly believe that free and open trade between nations is the key to growing a strong and vibrant economy," said Kelly, who was sworn in during a Washington ceremony. "That type of free commerce is important not only to America but to all the nations of the world." Kelly's induction comes as he prepares for a visit next month to China, where he will meet with government officials to discuss expanded trade opportunities and the need to admit China to the World Trade Organization. "UPS fully supports bringing China into the WTO," Kelly said. "We can ill afford to shut out a trading partner of the size, scope and potential of China. We believe that expanded trade with China will result in more opportunities, not fewer, for American companies." As the top national advisory committee on global trade, the President's Export Council advises the President on government policies and programs that affect U.S. trade performance; promotes export expansion; and provides a forum among the business, industrial, agricultural, labor and government sectors to discuss and resolve trade-related issues. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., UPS recently was recognized by Fortune magazine as the World's Most Admired mail, package and freight delivery company. The company, which serves more than 200 countries and territories around the globe, reported 1998 revenues of $24.8 billion, including more than $3 billion from international operations. ups.com For more information, contact: Tad Segal / John Flick - UPS - 202-675-3381 / 404-828-6346
