TimeStep's Permit Enterprise Suite Wins Network Magazine's 1999 VPN Product of the Year Award; Secure VPN leader notches another industry accolade

KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999--Already acclaimed by numerous computer trade magazines with product superlatives, TimeStep's PERMIT Enterprise(TM) today was announced as a recipient of Network Magazine's prestigious 1999 "Product of the Year" award for Virtual Private Network (VPN) excellence.

The announcement by Network Magazine adds yet another mark of distinction in an already banner year for the secure VPN leader, which earlier won recognition from InfoWorld (Golden Guardian), Network Computing (Well Connected), and Data Communications (Hot Product of the Year).

"We select Products of the Year to recognize and draw attention to the products that stand out from the surrounding landscape," said Steve Steinke, editor-in-chief, Network Magazine. Steinke added that, like all other winners, TimeStep's PERMIT Enterprise was chosen because of "compelling new features... outstanding price/performance... [and a] unique approach to solving long-term problems."

"I am proud that Network Magazine has recognized PERMIT Enterprise with this award, but even without the awards we've won this year, I am proud of what TimeStep has accomplished," said Tim Hember, president and CEO, TimeStep. "Our people have developed the best VPN technology available on the market today. Period. No one else in the industry is able to deploy large-scale installations with the same level of performance and reliability."

PERMIT Enterprise allows corporations to realize the cost benefits of using the Internet for business communication without worrying about information security. PERMIT Enterprise is an IPSec-compliant, secure VPN system designed for large-scale business communications and managed VPN services. Corporations and service providers can deploy PERMIT Enterprise easily into existing networks without affecting network performance or end-users, and its scalable architecture enables the creation and management of multiple secure VPNs. PERMIT Enterprise is the complete network security solution for corporate intranets, extranets, and Internet remote access.

Product of the Year awards will be given out during Networld + Interop at the Bellagio Hotel, in Las Vegas on May 12th.

T.Italia backs Telekom deal on conditions -source
MILAN, April 20 (Reuters) - The board of Telecom Italia on Tuesday backed a proposed mega-merger with Deutsche Telekom but only on certain conditions, a source close to the Italian telecoms group said.

Telecom Italia, which has been studying what could be one of the largest corporate deals ever as a way of escaping a $65 billion hostile bid from Olivetti , now appears less likely to hold a joint news conference with Deutsche Telekom planned for Wednesday to unveil the deal, the source said.
