Compaq Web Advisory: Compaq Trounces Sun In Java Performance

Compaq Tru64(TM) UNIX(R) DS20 AlphaServer
Runs Java(TM) Apps 62% Faster than Sun Solaris

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999-- Compaq Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:CPQ -
news) reinforced its 64-bit leadership with record-setting Java performance numbers. Compaq today
announced its Java Development Kit (JDK) running its latest Fast Java Virtual Machine (Fast JVM) for
Tru64 UNIX has generated performance results far greater than reported by Sun Microsystems. The
industry's first 64-bit implementation of Java attained an unprecedented 29.1 SPECjvm98(TM) result,
exceeding the best-published Sun Solaris result of 18.0 by 62 percent. Compaq's VolanoMark(TM)
results were equally impressive, generating results of 4792 messages per second for 200 concurrent
connections, 158 percent faster than the best results reported in the March 1999 edition of JavaWorld
magazine.

At the same time, Compaq's partner, Tower Technology, released an enhanced version of their
TowerJTM Java compiler for Tru64 UNIX, thereby extending the choice and capabilities around high
performing server-side Java application deployment for Tru64 UNIX customers.

The announcements were the latest demonstration of Compaq NonStop® eBusiness solutions and its
commitment to providing a significant performance advantage for customers building complex distributed
Java applications in a Tru64 UNIX environment. Compaq has offered Java CompatibleTM technology for
more than two years on its Tru64 UNIX Alpha architecture and was ranked first, according to a 1998
D.H. Brown Associates report, for Distributed Enterprise Services based on its ''aggressively optimized
Java environment.'' In March 1998, Compaq also announced industry leading performance results for its
then current Java implementation against the CaffeineMark(TM) benchmark. In December 1998, Compaq
led the industry by being the first licensee to deliver a beta of Java 2.

Compaq's SPECjvm98 and VolanoMark 2.1 numbers were generated on a single-processor Compaq
AlphaServer DS20 a 500Mhz EV6-based machine with 256MB running Compaq Tru64 UNIX Version
4.0D. The test involved Compaq's Java Development Kit (JDK) V1.1.7B using the March 1999 released
UNIX Fast JVM beta, an updated Just-in-time (JIT) compilation technology with superior memory
management and execution. The SPECjvm98 benchmarks compared Compaq against Sun in a
comparably equipped Sun Ultra 60 Model 1360.
