Some rights -- unless married in the strict old form, the Roman wife had no voice in her divorce, nor did the Jewish wife in general. I believe that was Jesus's reason for forbidding divorce. True, there were occasions in which women had some special rights, but mostly dealt with ownership and return of dowries, i.e. protected the rights of the bride's father or family, rather than her personal rights. Keeping women ignorant, silent in church, were all part of a giant plot to repress and silent women and keep them from exerting their enormous powers over their men that resulted from their potent sexuality.
