"We continue to have very good design (wins in modems), but we think order growth and revenue growth won't become significant until late in the year," Aylesworth said.

He said sales to the disk drive industry were down from the fourth quarter due to normal seasonality. The PC business, which accounts for most disk drive sales, tends to fall in the first quarter from the fourth due to a post-Christmas hangover.

"We see that, overall, the hard disk drive industry is in a recovery mode," Aylesworth said. "There's good evidence that recovery will continue" and that last year's inventory glut in that business is largely behind it.


The company is developing more uses for the DSP chip, with one promising application in the color laser printer business, Aylesworth said. He said TI is working with Minolta Corp. and other printer makers to integrate its chips into their products.
