$2.4 Million in Pre-Auction Bids Received for Internet's Largest Sports Auction

April 20, 1999 10:37 AM
WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999--Sales OnLine Direct, Inc. PAID announced today that the "worlds largest sports memorabilia auction" is now available for viewing online. The nearly 1,200 lots of sports memorabilia can be located at www.auctioninc.com. Items for auction include the T206 Sweet Caporal Cigarettes Honus Wagner baseball card, 1873 Museum-Quality Major League Trophy Ball, Michael Jordan's drivers license and an Historic Babe Ruth Home Run Ball, to name a few.

Mastro Fine Sports Auctions, the nation's leading auctioneers of sports memorabilia, are producing the auction. Mastro chose Sales OnLine Direct to host the site due to its state of the art technology and strong reputation.

Mastro Fine Sports conducted the largest sports auction ever held in November 1998, which exceeded $5.4 million. The April offering is estimated to reach four million dollars. Principals at Mastro include Bill Mastro, who has been in the sports memorabilia business for 30 years and conducted Sothebys BID sports auctions from 1991 to 1994, and Don Flanagan, who conducted Christie's sports auctions from 1993 to 1997 and is the sole authenticator and appraiser for the MCI National Sports Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Sales OnLine Direct, Inc. is coordinating the technical side of the auction. "Our personnel have worked for weeks to prepare for the expected influx of web hits for the upcoming website launch. The additional traffic will be handled by Sun Microsystems SUNW Ultra SPARC servers, running in parallel. The company is using multiple T-1 lines to respond quickly and smoothly to browser requests. The company has also completed an upgrade to new Cisco Systems CSCO routers," said Marc Stengel, Vice President of Sales OnLine Direct.

Sales OnLine Direct has drawn a great deal of attention to itself with the announcement of hosting the Worlds Largest Sports Auction ever to hit the web and the recent consignment of a $10,000,000 original movie poster collection. The success of the eBay EBAY and Onsale Inc. ONSL auction sites has demonstrated the popularity of on line auctions, attracting others to do the same. Sales OnLine Direct Inc. is developing other complementary e-commerce sites designed around specific "vertical markets." Sales OnLine Direct is developing a new portal site that will be a launching point for our 3 million yearly visitors to hundreds of sites. The launch date is Thursday, April 29, 1999. This new website will improve navigation, and make shopping easier. The site will also encompass banner advertising for select sites.

This announcement follows Auction Inc.'s announcement of its acceptance into agreements with; K-Tel International Inc. KTEL , The Dick Butkus Football Network, Amazon.com Inc. AMZN , Dell Computer DELL , Cyberian Outpost COOL , Borders GRP BGP

Larry, I obviously don't believe any such thing, but I do feel quite comfortable with what management does say based on their record. I would reevaluate that if Q1 numbers are short. After repeated assurances that everything is on track, a shortfall would seriously damage the credibility that Dell's management recognizes is so important and has worked so hard for years to cultivate. Aloha.

P.S. what does Hal say now with Dell up 2 1/8? An abberation? Dead cat bounce? What? Aloha.

Larry, I'm no TA guy, but it looks to me so far that Dell has retested its low and bounced strongly off of it. Do you consider this a double bottom? How long does it take HAL to spot a "trend"? Regards and aloha.
