IDT Teams with RealNetworks To Enable First Distributed Multi-Tier Internet Broadcast Architecture
Jump to first matched term
HACKENSACK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1999--

Compelling new services based on RealSystem G2 to be provided to

IDT Internet user base

IDT (NASDAQ: IDTC) today announced that it has teamed with RealNetworks(TM) (NASDAQ: RNWK), the recognized leader in streaming media, to help build the first distributed multi-tier Internet broadcast architecture. IDT, through the installation of RealSystem G2 broadcast hubs, will assist in the delivery of the highest quality multimedia experience to IDT Internet users through RealNetworks' Real Broadcast Network (RBN).

IDT Internet customers using RBN will be routed to specially installed broadcast hubs located nearest to them throughout IDT's POPs to deliver a higher quality viewing or listening experience to users. With these new value added services, RBN now features an Internet broadcasting network capable of reaching the largest Internet audiences today.

By enabling IDT's customers to gain direct access to Real Networks' streaming audio and video, users will be able to benefit from IDT's robust backbone and therefore have a better Internet broadcasting experience.

"We are happy to be working together with Real Networks to ensure that our customers have clear and reliable access to the Internet broadcast programming of their choice now and in the future," said Michael Fischberger, Senior Vice President of IDT's Domestic Telecom and Internet Services. "This is the first of many new initiatives that we have taken to reinvigorate our newly independent Internet division."

"RealNetworks is proud to offer this enhanced service through IDT, a recognized leading Internet provider with a superb backbone," said Ian Freed, General Manager, RBN, at Real Networks. "This agreement supports RBN's multi-tier approach for improving the Internet multimedia experience for consumers and broadening the Internet broadcast capabilities for content providers."
