4/20/99 - Canada's Martin Says Most Countries Support IMF Gold Sales

<Picture>

Ottawa-April 20-Bridge--Canadian Finance Minister Paul Martin said today that most countries support the idea of International Monetary Fund (IMF) gold sales to finance debt-relief operations.

But Martin said that it remains to be seen whether there will be movement on the issue at the approaching IMF/World Bank meetings in Washington.

Commenting on Bank of Canada Governor Gordon Thiessen's remarks this morning giving unequivocal support for the gold sales, Martin said: "That has been Canada's position for quite some time...not all of the countries are in favor. I think it remains to be seen at this particular meeting where that lies."

When asked if most countries support the idea of the gold sales, Martin replied "yes."
