Actually, this is not quite accurate. Given changes in the way the Nasdaq operates, it is possible for retail investors to buy at the bid, depending on the situation. The problem in this particular case is that there was undoubtedly a lot of competition at the 55 bid, and another market maker that is willing to buy 50,000 shares at 55 will get a call before a retail bid for 1,000 posted at the same price.
