I agree that in certain circumstances the vile act of rape (I have to put that in so no one will think I advocate it) has been considered 'normal,' in the sense of being 'expected.'

Normal doesn't, neither you nor I mean, equate to 'normative.' But I can see already that unless this distinction is clear, it is likely to create a new series of misunderstandings.

Jbe and I (if I may be so bold, Joan) say that at certain historical times, in certain circumstances, rape by conquering armies has

conformed with, adhered to, or constituted a norm, standard, or pattern [ie been considered normal for that group by its members at that time]

but we are neither of us saying that rape by conquering armies should

prescribe a norm or standard. [ie be considered normative by us.]
