I think the cliche for this is "synergy." So much for IRID not being adaptable.

Indonesia Iridium Users Can Access Excelcomindo GSM Network

JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Iridium subscribers in Indonesia can now access the local GSM network of PT Excelcomindo Pratama, lowering their telephone costs by up to 75%, Excelcomindo director Rudiantara said Tuesday.

He told Dow Jones Newswires that Excelcomindo was the first Indonesian GSM cellular operator to allow Iridium users on their mainly urban network. The agreement was signed last year and has been activated this week, he said.

"This is the commercial operation of a roaming agreement with Iridium so Iridium subscribers are able to roam in(the) Excelcom network," he said. Previously, Iridium users had to use the more expensive satellite network owned by Iridium's local service provider PT Iridium.

Excelcomindo is one of three GSM - or global system for mobile communications - operators in Indonesia. Iridium users outside the network area must still use the company's proprietary network.

Next month, Excelcomindo also plans to allow its subscribers to use the Iridium network outside Excelcomindo's coverage area. "It's a complementary service - in the cities you can use our network. In the jungle you use Iridium," Rudiantara said.

He said the agreement would reduce costs for Iridium subscribers by about 75%. However, he added that Excelcomindo wouldn't immediately gain much from the arrangement, saying: "It won't significantly raise revenues for Excelcomindo in the short term since the number of Iridium subscribers in Indonesia remains small."

Iridium World Communications Ltd. (IRID) is developing a global wireless communications network.
