Playing a significant role in providing the telecommunications needs of both residential and private entities in Sri Lanka, SLT has more than 500,000 customers in the island, providing services that include Internet connection, Frame Relay, DataPac and ISDN. The only telecom company that provides fixed line service in the island, its switching and transport networks supported by inland and international links, also serves as the foundation of all telecom joint venture companies in the country. SLT operates more than 400 telephone exchanges on the island with a switching capacity of 600,000. As part of its goal to continuously provide new telecom services, SLT decided to introduce a Pre-Paid Call Card System that will allow its customers direct dial access to its 'Globe Link' and local call services. According to SLT, they evaluated many systems and found Lucent's solution most competitive, as there were no similar solutions in the industry with its capabilities. Through Keells, Lucent's DEFINITY ECS and Intuity CONVERSANT was implemented on schedule. These solutions will allow SLT to seamlessly integrate the new services with their existing switching network. DEFINITY ECS will provide the switching functions between local public switched network and the international gateway. The DEFINITY system provides a port capacity to support between 40,000 and 100,000 busy hour calls in a standard call mix. In addition, the Intuity CONVERSANT Interactive Voice Response application will be used to authenticate the Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and handle calls intelligently.
