Ian,
Hi!!!

RE: Has Dell done a better job of kicking butt than we imagined?

Nothing DELL does should surprise those that know what Virtual Integration is all about...perhaps we should all remember the words which Meathead used when finishing off one of his more recent posts..

It went something like this:

"I can just imagine the day when Mort and Michael looked at each other and said: CHECKMATE!"

Best, Kemble

Ian,

The revenue numbers for CPQ and IBM were pretty good though. So, it may be that their unit sales are OK. I haven't gone through the MSFT earnings breakup yet, but I will be watching NT server sales.

MSFT beat its estimate by 3¢; CPQ missed by 16¢; IBM lost nearly $1B. If MSFT made its number plus, who bought all that software from it. Obviously not the 2 industry leaders.

I think this line of thought is a simplification. Just becuase they sold machines at a loss due to rebates and narrow (negative) margins doesn't mean that they didn't give Mr Softie his due for the OS and software. MSFT can make money even when their VARS lose money.

What a laugh.. CPQ is just a VAR to MSFT! For that matter in MSFT business model, all of the computer makers are VARS. They add the hardware.
