Siebel Systems Teams with IBM to Deliver Siebel Enterprise Applications Tightly Integrated with DB2 Universal Database
SAN MATEO, CALIF. (April 20) BUSINESS WIRE -April 20, 1999--
Packaged Solution Lowers Total Cost of Ownership to Siebel Customers with Complete, Out-of-the-Box Support for DB2
Siebel Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:SEBL) today announced that the company has signed a joint development, marketing and sales agreement with IBM Corporation (NYSE:IBM) to deliver out-of-the-box integration between IBM's DB2(R) Universal Database(TM) and Siebel Enterprise Applications. This long-term commitment will enable customers to install and deploy Siebel enterprise relationship management (ERM) applications faster, minimize the total cost of ownership, and allow for greater scalability as their organizations grow.
As part of the agreement, Siebel will package and ship DB2 Universal Database as the recommended database with its sales, marketing and customer service applications. Siebel chose DB2 because it offered the highest performance for enterprise scalability and afforded the greatest facility for Web and E-commerce enablement at the lowest cost to Siebel customers.
Under the terms of the agreement, Siebel and IBM will support DB2 for Siebel applications on IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, HP/UX, Microsoft Windows NT and IBM OS/390. Customers who purchase Siebel applications and DB2 together will pay substantially less than if they purchased these products separately. In addition, IBM has agreed to provide these customers with direct access to IBM's customer service and support. This ensures that Siebel's DB2 customers have the most knowledgeable DB2 support professionals assisting them first-hand.
"We made this strategic commitment to IBM DB2 for several reasons," said Thomas M. Siebel, chairman and CEO, Siebel Systems, Inc. "We have done exhaustive benchmarking of our application suite on DB2 versus Oracle and other leading database management systems. Without question, DB2 is the highest performance, most scalable database platform for an enterprise deployment of the Siebel Enterprise Applications. DB2 enables our customers to fully exploit the power of the Web-based Siebel 99 product line. With DB2 our customers can harness the full power of the Internet to establish and maintain customer relationships. Completely integrated. Entirely Web-based. Fully supported by both IBM and Siebel. Low cost. This is a big win for Siebel Systems customers worldwide."
"Siebel Systems is a leader in Web-based enterprise applications software. Companies are choosing IBM DB2 Universal Database as the foundation for E-business applications. This is a natural combination of leading technologies bringing enormous benefit to our mutual customers," said Janet Perna, general manager, data management, IBM Software Solutions. "This multi-year relationship between Siebel Systems and IBM will bring our joint customers increasing strategic business benefits as we continue to optimize our products to work even better together."
"This joint venture between Siebel and IBM is long awaited news for Bank of America," said Steve Callaghan, executive vice president for direct banking technology, Bank of America. "It supports our long term technology plans for delivering integrated sales and service to our customers with standardized components on a highly scalable, Web-enabled platform. With IBM and Siebel Systems working together, we are better positioned to meet the massive scalability requirements and Web-based customer management mandate of the ever-growing Bank of America enterprise. This is exactly the type of cooperation that we need from our technology partners."
Siebel and IBM have also created a Joint Technology Center, located at Siebel Systems headquarters in San Mateo, CA, staffed by both Siebel and IBM engineers. In this center, new Siebel products will be built, tested and certified for optimal performance on the DB2 platform. DB2 will also be used as the database engine of choice for Siebel's new Sales.com Internet initiatives.
