Allen bought in because this is a fundamental growth area. He knows that the market is premature, but that's how you get the good runups- you buy before all the fools who are buying internet stocks now have heard of it. Then when they come running you make out. Wireless Mobile Data's time will come. Metricom has the market cornered right now and is growing its network. Infrastructure is difficult to replace quickly.
