Patch: thanks for the response. CDMA is code division multiple access - a technique of encoding a signal over the airways to handle many users. It grew out of the old spread spectrum technology used in the military. The technique "spreads" a signal out over a relatively large frequency range so it resembles "noise" to a receiver who does not know how to "decode" it (a "normal" signal looks like a spike in the frequency pattern). The military used spread spectrum for its security attributes. It turns out that it is also an excellent way to "spread" multiple users over a large range of frequency without interfering with each other. Hence CDMA can allow many (millions) of users to share a limited amount of available bandwidth on the airwaves. For this reason, it is deemed better than GSM and much better than analog techniques of FDMA, etc. Sorry for the dissertation but I got carried away! Moby.
