Canada stock darling Bid.Com flops in Nasdaq debut

By Lydia Zajc

TORONTO, April 20 (Reuters) - Investors did a reality check and sent the stock of Canadian market darling Bid.Com International Inc. (BII.TO - news) (BIDS - news) tumbling in its Nasdaq debut on Tuesday.

The online auction house, which sells products as diverse as computers and diamond bracelets, plunged to $11.13 on Nasdaq after opening at $16.63 and hitting an early high of $17.

In early afternoon dealings the stock traded at $14, down $2.63 from its opening price.

Bid.Com shares performed similarly on the Toronto Stock Exchange, reaching a session low of C$17.20 after starting the day at C$24.25. They then recouped some losses, but were still down C$3.30 at C$20.95.

Bid.Com has been compared by some analysts with U.S. electronic retailer eBay Inc. (EBAY - news) and has raced higher recently on the TSE on the back of its Internet credentials. Observers had anticipated that once it reached Nasdaq it would surge to levels enjoyed by other Internet firms.

It was a case of ''buy on rumor, sell on news'' on Tuesday, said Fred Ketchen, director of equity trading at ScotiaMcLeod.

Many other Internet-related issues were also getting beaten up in North American markets as investors decided to sell their stock and lock in profits following the recent run-up, he said.

Fund manager Duncan Stewart at Tera Capital summed up Bid.Com stock in three words. ''Over-hyped, over-promoted, overbought,'' he said.

Stewart, echoing other analysts, noted that Bid.Com, unlike well-established eBay, is far from reaping a profit.

''The actual worth of this company compared to eBay is ... a 50 cents to a couple of bucks,'' he added.

Stewart pointed out there is little recognition of Bid.Com as a brand name among American investors.

''Nobody in the States knows who this company is in terms of ... buying and selling over the Internet.''

Bid.Com is based in Toronto, Ontario and Tampa, Florida.

OH, Frank.... You have said it perfectly... If you loved this stock on 4-8-99 when it closed at $30.70... why not today ?? The stock and its potential have not changed... Nasdaq can be tough, but it can also be the best situation for a good stock and this IS a good stock. Don't forget that, for all those still long....

Cheers.... Mac

Well put Frank! From what I've seen on the NASDAQ it may not even take a couple of weeks. Lets not forget that we come into the picture the day after the second largest NASDAQ drop in history. Many of those that rebounded today were the BIG BOYS......Our day will come.
