Clerical error briefly "hikes" Compaq
stock

SAN FRANCISCO, April 20 (Reuters) - A clerical error at the Pacific
Exchange caused the stock of Compaq Computer Corp.(CPQ -
news) to momentarily appear as if it were trading at $900 a share
Tuesday before it was corrected back to normal levels of about $23.50.

Exchange officials attributed the phantom price hike to a ''clerical error'' but could give no further
information. ''It is now being corrected,'' an exchange spokeswoman said.

Compaq ousted company President Eckhard Pfeiffer Sunday, nine days after the Houston-based
company announced that its first quarter earnings would be far below expectations.

Compaq stock was 75 cents higher at $23.50 in consolidated New York Stock Exchange trading in late
afternoon.
